Chapter 5
Ellie was staying over at a friendâs house.
That meant only one thing. Ava was going to sleep at the station. Oscar must have sensed her intent when he had picked her up to go to work and she carried a blanket with her.
He said nothing, although he did raise his eyebrow in suspicion.
Lately, Ava had been getting Ellie to convince her mom that she should move on and get a phone instead. She had unplugged her landline from its socket but not before she called her mom and informed her she wouldn't be using the phone anymore. Still, she couldnât help but cast her eyes toward the phone every now and again.
She had learned to ignore the calls and messages that showed up every evening. She had gotten better; she just had to prove it to Oscar. And one way to prove it was to sleep at her own house, without the presence of either Ellie or her mom.
At the end of the day, Oscar had offered to drive her home. It had become their daily ritual. He would pick her up and send her home after. Today, she had told him that she wanted to use the bus to get home.
âI need to remember how to use the bus,â she said.
Oscar looked at her incredulously.
âNo, you donât.â
Ava hung her head and followed him to the car.
She dreaded being alone the entire drive. However, she was determined to prove herself. Before she got out of the car, Oscar stopped her. He felt guilty at seeing Avaâs struggle at putting on a brave face. Part of that guilt was contributed by her anger at him previously. He never wanted her to feel as if she were useless and make her think that he would forcibly remove her from the case. Even if he wanted to, it would just be wrong. It was her case first.
âYou donât have to go there if you donât want to. I have a spare room.â
Ava shook her head and feigned bravery. She wanted to wait until Oscar had driven off before she entered her garage and slept in her car.
But he stayed.
Ava wanted to reason that this whole thing was a process that took steps. If she wanted to sleep alone, in her own home, she could have used sleeping in the garage as the first step. The next step would be sleeping in the living room and then finally her room. She had to get used to the small sounds she heard late at night.
Oscar still hadnât left. Ava waved at him to drive off. She was fine. Oscar simply crossed his arms and leaned back. He wasnât leaving her alone on the sidewalk. It was too dangerous. Also, he wanted to see how far she could make it into the house.
Ava took a deep breath, then opened her front door, starting when she felt Oscarâs presence beside her.
âWhat are you doing?â she hissed.
Oscar shrugged.
âIâm going to check the place and prove to you that thereâs nothing to be afraid of.
